With a more comfortable ride, albeit still in the back of a pickup, we set off for an 11-hour bus ride to Flores. Kelsey was lucky enough (read the only girl & chivalry is not dead) to score a coveted seat within the truck cabin. At one point on the drive, the road just stopped & we had to cross via a 'ferry.' Everyone on the bus was certain this was where it ends & without discussion, every window was desperately opened in case a submerged evacuation was necessary. It was fine.

Flores is an adorable old town built on an island within Lake Peten separated from the mainland by a narrow road. We enjoyed food that didn't make us ill, spent a day drinking cheap beers on the waterfront during a downpour, kayaked around the lake, and jumped off rope swings. The rope swings were at a family property that gently suggested a few bucks to use their lakeside chairs, diving board, and swings. Kyle was very patient waiting to film Kelsey's jump which took at least a dozen attempts with last-minute abandonment & a Corona.

We also spent a day exploring nearby Tikal, one of the largest Mayan ruins. It was amazing to see the huge structures & learn more about the Mayan civilization.
