This was the most trying journey yet (mostly for Kelsey). Following a 9 hour ride, our eco lodge offered a free shuttle from the bus terminal. The ‘shuttle’ was the back of a wet, muddy, & rusted pickup truck for 45 minutes during a thunderstorm across 4x4 required roads. Every dinner made us sick & there was a whole laundry situation.

Despite that, Semuc Champey was absolutely gorgeous. We spent nearly a full day with our guide & a family of 5 with young kids. The adventure involved hiking to a natural set of pools that also doubles as a bridge over a river, a cave tour which involved swimming while holding a candle (the only light source) in one hand, and a tubing ride home down the river back to the lodge. The family was super sweet & so adventurous. It definitely more than made up for the other “struggles.” We are very happy to be moving back to civilization to a clean hostel with AC.
